What is OU ow?
When you hear the /ow/ sound at the beginning or in the middle of a syllable, it is usually spelled ou. When you hear the /ow/ sound at the end of a syllable, it is usually spelled ow.
Does ow have two sounds?
We use the key phrase “Snow Plow” to teach this phonogram because “ow” has two sounds. It says /O/ like in the snow, and /ow/ like in plow. Now, typically students recognize the “ow” (like in plow) sound first, as they have seen “ow” as a word by itself.

Is bread a short e word?
The combination of the vowels “e” and “a” typically result in a long e sound. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule, e.g., bread and wealth, which result in a short e sound. The exceptions are noted in a separate table below. The ”ee” spelling words and “ea” spelling words” make the long e sound.
