Can Orajel numb your tooth?
The reason why Orajel isn’t very effective for numbing the tooth is because the gel isn’t able to penetrate the surface of the tooth to reach the tooth nerve. This is why the product is labeled as a “topical” anesthetic. The label of topical means that it only works on the surface and not beyond that.
What happens if I swallow Orajel?
It can cause serious side effects, especially in children, if any of the medicine gets into the mouth or is swallowed. This medicine may cause a rare, but serious blood problem called methemoglobinemia.

How long does it take for Orajel to kick in?
In my case, I applied the Orajel on and around the area, and got an immediate numbing (which is nowhere near the rubber-mouth feel of an injected dental anaesthetic, FYI.) However, within about 10-15 minutes, the pain starting creeping back, and was full-on back to original pain in 20 minutes.
